You have been invited to someone's house for Dashain. The question is not whether to bring something — it is what to bring that will not be the fourth identical box of sweets on the table by the time you arrive.
This is a practical guide to Dashain and Tihar gifts, written for the person standing in a shop the week before, and it ends with the order-by dates that actually matter if you are shipping something.
What makes a good Dashain gift
Dashain is a gathering festival. People travel, houses fill up, and the household you are visiting is feeding and hosting a lot of people at once. That shapes what lands well:
- Something the whole room can use. A gift that occupies one person is a gift the host has to find space for. A gift that pulls eight people around a table earns its place.
- Something that is not eaten by Tuesday. Sweets and fruit are traditional and always welcome, but everyone brings them. If you want to be remembered, bring the thing that is still in the house next year.
- Something that works across ages. The hardest part of a full house is the age spread — grandparents, teenagers and small children in one room, wanting different things.
- Something you do not have to explain. A gift that needs a tutorial gets put in a cupboard.
Gift ideas that work
For the household
Good tea, a quality set of glasses, or a serving dish that will come out every festival. Practical, used, and not competing with the food already on the table.
For the children
Dashain money is the tradition and no gift replaces it. If you want something alongside it, pick what gets used at the gathering itself rather than taken home and forgotten.
For the room
This is where a game earns its keep. A family game set is the rare gift that makes the gathering better while it is happening — it is not stored for later, it comes out that evening.
Our own Langur Burja set was built for exactly this: six dice, a printed mat, and a game that most Nepali and Indian families already know, so nobody has to be taught. It takes a minute to explain to anyone who does not. At $39.99 it sits in the range where it reads as a real gift rather than a token.
For someone far from home
If you are sending to family abroad, the strongest gifts are the ones that recreate the festival rather than describe it. A game their parents played is a different kind of parcel from a card.
Why a dice game, specifically
Langur Burja — also called Jhandi Munda, depending on where your family is from — is the game that comes out at Dashain in a very large number of households. Six dice, six symbols, and a round that takes under a minute.
What makes it a good gift rather than just a good game is the age range. A seven-year-old can play it correctly on their second round, and the arithmetic is simple enough that younger children get to feel fast rather than lost. Nobody at the table is at a disadvantage, which is not true of most things you can put in a box.
The full rules are here if you want to read them before deciding.
Dashain and Tihar dates
In 2026, Dashain runs 11–25 October, with Ghatasthapana on the 11th and Tika on the 21st. Tihar follows on 8–11 November. Tika is the day most families gather, so it is the date to plan a gift around.
When to order so it arrives in time
If you are shipping rather than carrying, this is the part that decides whether a gift works. Our published guidance:
- Dashain 2026: it is now too late for shipping to arrive before Tika (21 October 2026).
- To arrive before Bhai Tika (11 November 2026) — order by 28 October 2026 standard, or 3 November 2026 expedited.
These are guidelines based on typical transit times rather than guarantees, and carriers get measurably busier as the festival approaches. If the gift has to arrive on a particular day, order earlier than you think you need to — the week before a festival is the worst time to be optimistic about shipping.
We ship from Texas and the set is in stock, so orders go out within one to two business days of payment clearing.
A note on Tihar
Tihar is a quieter, longer festival, and Bhai Tika at the end of it is the moment siblings exchange gifts. If you missed Dashain, this is the second window rather than a consolation. In 2026 Bhai Tika falls on 11 November; order by 28 October 2026 standard or 3 November 2026 expedited for it to arrive in time.
Common questions
What is a good Dashain gift for a family?
Something the whole household can use together during the gathering rather than one person's possession. Food is traditional but duplicated; a family game, good tea or a serving piece that comes out every festival all last longer.
When should I order a Dashain gift so it arrives in time?
It is now too late to ship for Dashain Tika (21 October 2026). For Bhai Tika on 11 November 2026, order by 28 October 2026 standard or 3 November 2026 expedited. Carriers get busier as the festival approaches, so order earlier if the date is fixed.
What do people traditionally give at Dashain?
Money to children is the central tradition, alongside sweets, fruit and new clothes. Gifts to the host household are usually practical or shared rather than personal.
When is Dashain and Tihar in 2026?
Dashain runs 11 to 25 October, with Ghatasthapana on the 11th and Tika on the 21st. Tihar follows from 8 to 11 November.
Is a game a suitable gift for a Dashain gathering?
It works well because a gathering is exactly the setting a family game needs. Langur Burja in particular spans ages, so grandparents and small children can join the same round without anyone being at a disadvantage.
